Going to any establishment such as theme parks, hotels and even cities, one may notice signage around the area that tells people how to get from one place to another and even maps to depict the whole area. This is an example of Environmental graphics design. But what is it and what does it do?

Environmental graphic design a type of design that is responsible for giving people an idea of what the place is and what the place looks like. It. Environmental graphic design uses several design principles with the sole purpose of illustrating the face of the environment. It also provides information on what people can find in a particular area and how they can get to a specific area.

In environmental graphic design, the designers put signage or maps on different strategic areas of a place. The signage or maps are usually visible and accessible to individuals with clear instructions as to where they are, what they can find in the area and how they can get to other areas if needed. Facilities that are available on the area such as restrooms, phones of elevators or information counters also have their own signage as it is most commonly used by the masses.

Generally, the cost of environmental graphic design depends on a number of factors. The size of the place often dictates how much signage and how big the signage will be. Whether it is indoor or outdoor also affects the cost because indoor environmental graphic design differ from the designs needed for outdoors in terms of materials. The ambiance of the establishment is also another factor as the design, fonts and colors needed should mould to the façade of the area. Finally, the taste of the owner in terms of the material, font, and color also defines the cost. The more expensive the material is, the higher the cost.

Any establishment requires some form of environmental graphic designs. This helps people get around the area and find areas easily. If there area no graphics that tell people where they are or how to get to another area, there would be chaos. It is a fact that individuals who had a hard time maneuvering themselves to a particular establishment rarely comes back to them and looks for another area that they can go to. Environmental graphic design is also a great way to cut back on employees since organizations would need fewer information desks manned by people. Although it has the following advantages, maintenance of the environmental graphic design can be costly especially in outdoor areas such as parks or amusement parks. Since they are situated outdoors, they signage is exposed to natural elements that makes them prone to wear and tear. A regular maintenance in those areas is necessary so that the signage can continue the purpose of directing and providing individuals with information.

Environmental graphic design is a requirement for any establishment to provide graphic information to people regarding a particular space. The environmental graphic design not only provides order. In a way, environmental graphic design is another form of public service any business should invest in.
